When you fall and scratch you knee, the blood immediately starts to coagulate and form a scab. Pretty awesome huh?
Same thing kinda starts to happen when you work out.
If you're just starting out a new workout routine, that's like the scratch. (a good scratch of course!) Your muscles are being worked and if you work hard enough, you'll be sore. The more you keep doing the same things over and over, that's when that scab starts to form.
Your body becomes accustomed to what you do and that's when you start to hit that plateau. (you know what I'm talking about)
When that happens, you need to 'shock' your body.
In other words, change it up.
As a personal trainer, that's my goal with all my clients. Get them working and just as they're about comfortable with their routine... BAM change it up.
That's the key to getting the most our of your workouts.
*Nutrition Tip: You need to eat within an hour of working out. Your muscles just worked like crazy and now they need to be able recover and build themselves back up so they can recover and ready to go again soon.
